Pregnenolone

Poor memory is one of the most prominent and frustrating signs of aging. Other symptoms associated with aging and (subsequent diminishing levels of pregnenolone) include muscle/joint aches, low sex drive, high cholesterol, depression and fatigue.

Pregnenolone is a hormone produced from Cholesterol in the cells of the adrenal glands, brain, skin, testicles and ovaries. It may work directly or through cascading into other hormones such as DHEA, progesterone, estrogen, cortisol and other hormones. It is found in abundant levels in the brain. Pregnenolone has anti inflammatory and immune modulatory effects. In addition to this it has a beneficial effect on memory enhancement as well as mood. It may also improve eye sight and help in nerve regeneration (growth of new nerve tissue).

During the 1940’s and 1950’s pregnenolone was the drug of choice for the treatment of inflammatory conditions as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis, until cortisol and other more potent and patentable synthetic derivatives were synthesized. The studies conducted in those days showed that pregnenolone was effective in reducing the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. A recent study has shown an improvement in joint pain and mobility on pregnenolone supplementation.

Many factors contribute to low pregnenalone levels. These factors include aging as pregnenolone levels decline after the age of 35. Stress, exposure to toxic substances (e.g heavy metals) and various types of heart disease are some of the other factors contributing to this decline. Low levels of pregnenolone were found to be associated with many psychological disorders such as depression, generalised social phobia, anxiety disorders and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have found that treatment with pregnenolone improves memory impairments and prevents appearance of age-related cognitive disturbances.

Pregnenolone supplementation has shown to be beneficial in reducing fatigue, enhancing memory and improving concentration and focus. It has also been shown to be beneficial in autoimmune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis conditions. Pregnenolone has the ability to cascade into other hormones depending on the enzymatic activity and genetic build up of the individual which may to be helpful in situations where there are multiple hormonal deficiencies.

Bioidentical pregnenolone supplementation is similar in structure to the pregnenolone our body produces.
